It’s Not Just a Car

A stand of birch trees.

There is a difference between a rolls-royce and a car, a difference between a mastiff and a dog, a difference between a birch and a tree–in the world of poetry it’s the rolls-royces and mastiffs and the birches that make concrete writing that bring images to a readers mind. As writers this is something we need to keep in mind every time we sit down to put two words together, as poets we should always choose the explosive, colorful, concrete vernacular that makes the reader taste the poem. Not to be overdone of course, but in specificity we will find an aspect of brilliance.
