Total Sacrifice

Pedro de Orrente - The Sacrifice of Isaac - WG...

One of the keys to understanding what it means to count the cost of discipleship is to understand the concept of sacrifice.  To sacrifice means to give all of what is most valuable to you to another. It is not a payment owed, as if there were some attainable goal, it is a tribute due to a conqueror; in this case not just any tribute, but your intentions, words, actions, availability, relationships, the list goes on and on.

The bottom line is that God desires everything of you because He gave everything for you. As our creator and redeemer, God desires that we have the the fullest relationship possible with Him.

The cost of discipleship is the total sacrifice of one’s self to God. That is one of the reasons that this website exists: to help the believer give every area over to God.

C.S. Lewis in his classic book The Screwtape Letters highlights that there is no middle road for the human being. One is either living a life of obedience towards God or giving foothold to the devil. There is no riding the fence. Read this that the devil Screwtape writes to his nephew Wormwood.

“I once had a patient, a sound atheist, who used to read in the British Museum. One day, as he sat reading, I saw a train of thought in his mind beginning to go the wrong way. The Enemy, of course, was at his elbow in a moment. Before I knew where I was I saw my twenty years’of work beginning to totter. If I had lost my head and begun to attempt a defense by argument I should have been undone. But I was not such a fool. I struck instantly at the part of the man which I had best under my control and suggested that it was just about time he had some lunch.”

Total sacrifice is called for in the life of the Christian.

“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”1 Peter 5:8

Spend time today searching your heart and in prayer asking God to reveal areas of your life that you have yet to give over to God. Have you been spending time in the Word lately? In Prayer?  Do not use excuses! Take it to God and do business with Him.

  • Clarity. Brevity. Life.

My goals in blogging are threefold--clarity, brevity, and life.

First, my goal is to be crystal clear in presenting issues that I think deserve to be considered by my readers, either because of their current nature or because of their pertinence to society.

The second is to be brief.

The third goal is to portray life—not as thought about in an ivory tower, but as through the eyes of a twenty-two year old newlywed who is ever vigilant not to shut his eyes on reality.

Clarity—brevity—life, that is all that needs to be said.
